Why am I not hearing anything?
Plumas county is not a very populated county, and sometimes the radio will be silent
for a long time, because there is nothing going on.
Your best bet is to just leave an internet browser tab or window open in the
background on your computer on this page with your computer volume turned up,
so that when something does happen such as the fire department or ambulance
getting paged out, you will hear it.
What are all these code numbers I am hearing the cops use?
Agencies using radios for communications, have developed codes that they use
when speaking over the radio for a few different reasons.  For one, it cuts down on
unnecesary radio traffic when they just simply say a number that has a known
meaning, rather than having to say an entire sentence over the radio.  Another
reason is since their radio broadcasts can be heard by anyone with a scanner, in
some cases they don't want everyone to know what they are talking about.  So they
will say just the code.  Also, sometimes their signal is not very strong, and it is
easier for the person on the other end to interpret a code number being spoken,
rather than a more detailed sentence.
